EXCERPT (from Gabriel)
"Ya know, John, I've been thinking. Maybe you should get a dog."
Christ. A dog. Just what I need. Another perfect soul that I can get attached to, love more than life itself, then have it die on me, too.
"No, thanks, Bud. I'm doing okay. Just going to take some time."
Unfortunately, I have to pay for my meager nutrients so I find myself face-to-face with him while he rings up my bill.
"Really, John. Just listen for a minute. Please." Bud's entire demeanor changes in a heartbeat as he relates the story of a dog that saved his family from perishing in a house-fire. A dog, who shortly thereafter, was relinquished to the local shelter because his owners were getting divorced. A dog whose repayment for giving life was most likely going to be death as he was already nine-years-old.
So, as Bud recounted this sad tale, I did. Listen that is. Because something in the telling struck a familiar chord. Tugging at me, I think it was the fact that the dog and I were a lot alike. Through no fault of my own, I had lost the light of my life. Ditto for the dog. Then came the clincher...
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Prior to her writing career, Rebecca Stroud was an animal hospital employee, SPCA employee, and a wildlife sanctuary volunteer. She has also been politically active regarding a variety of animal issues for over 30 years.

Not exactly what I would look for in a story about man's best friend. Very short and I did not find it to be enlightening.
Too short but worth reading. I thought it was going to be a novel. Not 3 short, short stories! To short!
If you're a dog lover, these short stories will stay long in your memory. A quick read that is highly recommended.
I liked this set of tales. Short and to the point..the only one I had issues with was the final one...it seemed rushed...otherwise solid little tales
This author knows her dogs well. She develops these stories with a great talent for the written word. If you love dogs, you will love these short stories!
What a wonderful collection of dog stories!
Rebecca Stroud captured my attention with DO UNTO OTHERS, but solidifies her position as a quintessential writer of animal stories with this collection of three short stories. Any animal lover will highly enjoy these tales. GABRIEL was my personal favorite.
This collection of (too) short stories will appeal to everyone - not just those who love dogs.
But, I have to warn potential readers to be prepared to shed more than a few tears, and to be prepared for more than a few surprises.
This book touched my heart..............it truly did!!!!
