This book is a comprehensive, how-to manual for parents on a home program that has been shown to improve symptoms of autism. The core part of the program is a fifteen-minute massage that parents give their child once a day for at least five months. The book gives detailed, easily understood, step-by-step instructions for parents on the Qigong Sensory Training treatment as well as information from Chinese medicine to help them understand their child's autism. It includes massage techniques to assist the child in making eye contact, in calming down, and in making transitions. A DVD demonstrating the massage and the Qigong Sensory Training techniques is included with the book. This massage can be given to typically developing children as well as children on the autism spectrum.

In 2013 the DSM included sensory disturbances in the newest diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Louisa Silva, MD has provided the first research-based treatment for those sensory problems--sensory problems that we know block social and emotional development for children with autism. Because parents deliver QST massages to their child daily, it is an economical, effective, and eventually relaxing intervention for both parent and child. "Helping Your Child with Autism: A Home Program" is accessible to lay readers and supportive of parents. As a pediatric occupational therapist, I can very confidently write that this is the best intervention available for young children with ASD.Product details

Helping Your Child with Autism A Home Program from Chinese Medicine Qigong Sensory Training Louisa Silva MD MPH 9780982128008 Books Reviews
This book and DVD is available from the authors website [...] for $25.00 why it is listed here for 500+ is beyond me. Is someone trying to take advantage of families with children with autism?
I am fortunate to have witnessed first hand how this massage can help kids with SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) overcome many sensory issues. I have referred parents to the Qigong Sensory Traning website for the last 9 months. Even though the research is devoted mainly to children with Autism, I have seen it help kids with sensory hyper- and hypo-sensitivities as well. It seems to be when their tactile systems calm down learning starts taking place at a rapid rate.
I would like to challenge Dr. Silva to research SPDs.
This book has the great ability to teach parents Qigong Massage in layman's terms that are easy to follow. Step by step directions as well as troubleshooting are included. Using the magnificent power of touch, you are the one to help your child. As a trainer involved in the program, I have seen beautiful moments of bonding happen between parents and children and as the changes begin, parents once again have hope for the future.
This is an amazingly powerful, but easy and unobtrusive intervention. Dr. Silva explains it in a step by step process, with lots of reinforcement and pictures as well as a DVD. As one of the early trainers, I have seen incredibly profound effects of the use of this program. It may seem a bit daunting at first, but really only requires 15-20 minutes per day. Soon, your child will look forward to the time together. There is so much more hope for kids with autism than western medicine leads us to believe.
Dr. Louisa Silva, MD, MPH wrote Helping Your Child with Autism A Home Program from Chinese Medicine (2010) to describe Qigong Sensory Training (QST), a program that significantly improves sensory, social, and self-help skills in young children with autism and sensory problems, and to enable parents to carry out the program with their children at home, either by themselves or in partnership with a trained therapist. The book is relevant for autism specialists and therapists, as well as parents.
The writing style is informal, and the information presented is clear, coherent, and well developed. The book begins with introductory sections describing the scientific evidence that QST works and its benefits for young children with autism. Chapter One clearly explains the theoretical foundation of QST, Chinese ideas of energy, how it works in the body, what energy has to do with autism, and how QST treats autism. Chapter Two provides guidance for parents (and therapists) in deciding if QST is the right treatment for their child. Chapter Three answers questions parents and therapists might have about QST. Chapter Four provides detailed and clearly illustrated instructions for learning the twelve movements of Qigong massage, information on what each movement is intended to do, and signs of progress. In the DVD which accompanies the book, Dr. Silva explains how Qigong massage works and demonstrates each of the twelve movements. In addition, a separate chart guides parents in using the twelve movements with their child. Chapters Five and Six explain the range of responses children may have to each of the movements involved in the massage and offer specific suggestions for tailoring the movements to support the child as (s)he changes and improves. Subsequent chapters provide practical information on common food and environmental sensitivities children with autism may experience, and give suggestions for addressing them. Finally, checklists are provided which help parents and therapists track children's improvements resulting from Qigong massage. A useful index and additional resources are also included.
In addition to her qualifications as a family medicine physician, Dr. Silva completed training in Chinese medicine, earned a Master of Public Health degree, and is a board certified Acupuncturist. After the son of a close friend was diagnosed with autism, Dr. Silva developed the QST training program based on a successful treatment developed in Europe for children with autism. She trained early intervention professionals to train and support parents in Qigong massage and to work with children directly. She conducted a number of careful scientific studies over eight years, and continued to refine the massage protocol to arrive at a program parents can use with or without professional support.
I found this book/DVD extremely interesting, of substantial importance, and highly useful for parents of young children with autism, as well as for therapists working with children with autism. Having participated in two of Dr. Silva's research studies and as a private QST therapist, I have seen improvements in sensory functioning, sleep, digestion, and social skills in every child with whom I have worked. Of equal importance are the reductions in family stress and worries parents of young children with autism have for their children, as a result of this very promising treatment. I highly recommend this book for every parent looking for a way to help their child with autism.
This book/DVD contains simple to follow instructions for parents and caregivers of children with Autism and Sensory Disorders. It explains problems they may encounter while doing the massage and techniques for overcoming the problems. It also includes information regarding food sensitivities and possible causes of Autism. This is a research based treatment that really helps improve the developmental, digestive, sensory, language and social skills in children with Austim. I participated in the Research Study and saw these improvements first hand. It will not cure the Autism, but will improve their quality of life and make the disablity easier to live with.
