I met the author in grad school, and my first impression was that he had an interesting story to tell; this book is part of that tale.The novel recounts, in diary format, an ambitious summer bicycle trip from the east (NYC) to west (San Francisco) coast, interspersed with asides triggered by events in the main narrative, in which the author reflects upon environmental, social, and political issues, often with a strong counterculture flavor. Anyone who has been on a long journey such as this, exposed to the elements, and forced to sleep without shelter, knows that the mind must wander. This state of mind is an opportunity to examine the norms of one's life from the outside and develop a fresh perspective, perhaps a bit closer to the truth. For me, this was the central theme of the book.
The print is nice and large, with ample margins. Infelicities in formatting and language are somewhat frequent, and the book certainly could have benefitted from more careful editing. Nonetheless, I greatly enjoyed reading it and admire the author for following through on this substantial writing project.
