The Thorn and the Sinking Stone eBook CJ Dushinski Reviews
The Thorn and the Sinking Stone was a pleasantly surprising read for me. I saw a whole lot of it being compared to Romeo and Juliet so I was expecting insta-love and both characters killing each other off etc luckily that wasn't the case. This book had to do with warring family gangs, in this one it specifically focusing on the Daggers and the Roses. It's also set in a dystopian world where there are people who have powers and there were bad-asses riding motorcycles and a "Princess" who knew how to wield a Katana and see seconds into the future.
As far as the romance aspect of the book, I don't want to call what Sebastian and Rose had was insta-love just because they had a brief history together from a moment they shared when they were kids and because of that they were hesitant to kill each other off when pitted against the other by there families. Nor were they trusting of each other in the beginning either although deep down they both held on to a memory that made them care for the other. I personally loved the two together.
There is another aspect to the story that made the book interesting which was the Cursed people. That is what the government called those with special abilities. If one was found to be Cursed they were hauled off by the Watchmen and imprisoned and a good chance killed depending on a few things. I do wish we learned more about the Cursed in terms of what happened to them after they were captured we only saw bits and pieces of it so I didn't feel that part was developed well or maybe there is going to be a second book and we will learn more about what happens.
Now on to the world building, I wish it was more developed, I get that they lived in Rain City but I wanted to know more about it, who ran it for example. Yes you have the four gang royal families but they don't actually run things so who controls the Watchmen? Who in government is behind it all? Also would have loved to know more about the culture in Rain City it felt like we were just thrown into it. Then there was the Cursed, what happened that some have special abilities and how did they let people who have none overpower them. Honestly there are a lot of questions that were not answered at all and the world as a whole needed some serious in-depth development.
Minus the world building issue I had, I actually enjoyed the book for what it was. I liked the dual point of views, that always helps me connect with the characters better, I liked that Valencia was a strong heroine and Sebastian was a good guy and they both were complex characters that were very likable. Overall it was a fun read and hopefully if there is a second book which I'm assuming there is with the way it ended, that things will be more developed and thoroughly explained.
Memorable Quotes
~"Life is complicated enough with love, best leave hate well enough alone."
~"Our reality was this we were enemies caught in our parents' war, trapped in a desperate situation where desperate people did desperate things."
Cowboys? Katanas? Forbidden love?
Yes please.
The moment I read the synopsis for this book, I knew I had to read it. And boy, was my instinct right. I really enjoyed The Thorn and the Sinking Stone.
This book is a really intriguing blend of dystopian, romance, fantasy, fairy tale, scifi, and urban fantasy. I know that sounds like a lot of genres but oddly, it somehow works. I can't explain how. The chapters are written in two alternating points of view, from both Sebastian and Valencia who are in rival families. This brings a nice layer of character (and plot) depth to the "Romeo and Juliet" trope of fighting families and forbidden love, because we are able to read what each character is going through and feeling. This made them all the more relatable, and allows the reader to see both sides of things- that means villains are not truly villains, and heroes are not always heroes. Valencia and Sebastian are given unique, independent voices that are easy to separate while switching chapters.
I really liked watching the main couple's past become clearer, and their feelings towards one another develop. I hate the term "book boyfriend", but I definitely loved me some Sebastian. He's caring and protective and torn in half about his life. I also really liked how strong and kick ass Valencia was. She's a fierce sword wielder who knows how to swallow her fears and seize opportune moments. Reading them together was really interesting, seeing how they handle the world that seems to be against them.
The writing was very descriptive and well done. It was easy for me to get swept up in the scenery among the characters and play the scenes out like a movie in my head. The one thing that I wish had been developed more was the historical context/dystopian dynamic. This book takes place in the future when a city was reclaimed, but we are only really given a nutshell version of what happened and why their lives/cities are this way. I would have appreciated some more world building in that respect, because I think it would have helped me to better grasp why the four houses/families act the way they do.
I recommend this book to young adult fans who like any combination of forbidden love, fantasy, princesses, scifi, Romeo and Juliet, curses, weapons, or dystopia. This book does deal with violence and contains some profanity, so take note of that if that's undesirable to you. I sincerely look forward to reading the next book in (what I think and really hope) is a series.
I received a copy from YA Bound Book Tours in exchange for my honest review.
As soon as I started reading this I felt like I stepped into a Romeo and Juliet story with a futuristic/dystopian spin. Yes,I'm a huge Romeo and Juliet fan so I captivated by this right right away! The Earth was devastated by war.Survivors of different nations came together in what is now Rain City. Now after much bloodshed the city is broken into four sections ruled by four different families. The top two families, the Two Daggers and the Black Roses, have been stuck in a constant war, always wanting tit for tat and demanding blood for blood.Revenge always their game, but when revenge for the death of leader and father of Leold, which was in turn revenge for the death of the Hara family leader and father, things don't go as plan. When the Black Princess and the middle brother, one of the Dagger Prince, are thrown into battle (see what I mean by forever fighting, this is a never-ending family feud but what else do you expect from a rendition of Romeo and Juliet?)their lives become more at risk than just from each other. The city Watchmen catch wind of the street fight and if the Black Princess is captured and discovered to be Cursed,it will be the end of her life as she knows it or even end of her life period. But there are more than just her that are hiding their Cursed status, and an uneasy alliance to keep all safe from discovery and capture is the biggest risk that can ultimately prove their greatest downfall. And for two of these love they never anticipated may either destroy or save them.
